Kentucky Bourbon Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail

The Kentucky Bourbon Old Fashioned cocktail is a classic derived from pure suave and simplicity.

To this day, the Old Fashioned remains nearly the same as it originally was nearly 200 years ago.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz New Riff Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • ½ oz Simple syrup (or sugar cube)
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters (aromatic or orange bitters)
  • Orange peel and cherry to garnish

Mix:

  1. Add New Riff Kentucky Straight Bourbon, simple syrup, aromatic or orange bitters, and ice into a mixing glass.
  2. Stir until hazy condensation forms right above the liquid, then strain into a rocks glass with ice.
  3. Rim the rocks glass and garnish with orange peel; add a cherry in the glass.

The simple cocktail is derived from original bartending recipes and techniques developed during the late 1800s. The original cocktail comes from a definition created from an editorial called Balance and Columbian Repository in Hudson, New York. The editor wrote that cocktails are a combination of “spirits, bitters, water, and sugar.” By the later half of the 19th century, enthusiasts began to ask their bartenders for something similar to this original cocktail recipe. It was then the Old Fashioned was born.

Ingredients

Every good Old Fashioned begins with the use of good bourbon. If you can’t sip the bourbon on its own, there is no reason to use it as a staple in your cocktail. Fortunately, there is no better bourbon to use in a Kentucky Bourbon Old Fashioned than our flagship Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Our flagship whiskey’s tasting notes include rye spice, vanilla accents, and finishes of red-black fruits amid white pepper and clove.

The next ingredient used to create a perfect Kentucky Bourbon Old Fashioned is simple syrup. If you want to go back in time and make the drink similar to how it was made in the late 1800s, using a sugar cube is the way to success. Opt for simple syrup if you wish to follow the modern recipe used in nearly every bar today.

The last ingredients include both Angostura bitters and an orange peel to garnish. Don’t be fooled; these small additions are crucial to the whole creation of a Kentucky Bourbon Old Fashioned cocktail.

Directions

Follow our cocktail recipe and directions above to make an Old Fashioned that can’t be beaten. We recommend avoiding muddling your Old Fashioned in general if you prefer a clean look and texture to your cocktail.

Those unfamiliar with simple syrup should know that creating it is simple. Add equal parts sugar and water to a pot and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for 1 minute, remove from heat and let it cool. An easy proportion to start with is ½ cup of sugar and ½ cup of water in the pot. Other simple syrups can be made by adding additional flavors into the mixture while heating, including vanilla extract, ginger, tea, blueberries, and more.

What Type of Bourbon?

Those who want a classic flavor with a hint of modern twist need to use our flagship Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey in their Old Fashioned. Our bourbon has high-rye whiskey complexities, resulting in a slightly spicier drink. Those who find the traditional bourbon old-fashioned to taste too sweet will enjoy our flagship as a staple in their cocktail.
